What an adjustment is

A spinal adjustment is a quick, hands-on movement a chiropractor applies to a joint of the spine. Some people hear a pop and others hear nothing. Neither tells you how the adjustment went.

What you may feel

Many people feel pressure or a stretch. Some are sore for a day or so afterward, the way muscles are after exercise. Tell your doctor if anything is uncomfortable, and they will change what they do or stop.

The risks

Every treatment has risks. Soreness is the common one. Rare serious problems have been reported, and your doctor explains them before your first adjustment. You can say no to any part of care.

Questions to ask

  • What did the exam find?
  • What are my options, including not having an adjustment?
  • What are the risks for me?
  • What will each option cost, and what will my plan pay?
